Daily checks

Pre-operation inspection

A thorough pre-operation inspection can be completed in a few minutes and should be part of the daily routine, even when the machine performed normally the previous day. The aim is simple: identify leaks, damage, excessive wear or safety issues before putting the equipment under load.

With the machine parked on level ground and the engine off, check the engine oil level before operation. Check the coolant level using the expansion reservoir and never remove a radiator cap while the system is hot.

Also inspect the hydraulic fluid level and condition. Milky or unusually dark fluid can indicate contamination or deterioration and should be investigated before continuing work. Check the fuel level and make sure the filler cap and seal are in good condition.

Inspect the air filter and pre-cleaner, removing accumulated debris as required. In dusty conditions or when working around large amounts of chaff and dry vegetation, check the filter restriction indicator regularly.

A restricted air intake can reduce engine performance and increase the risk of unnecessary engine wear, so it should not be overlooked during daily checks.

Walk around the machine and inspect hydraulic hoses, fittings and connections for leaks, abrasion or visible damage. Pay particular attention to hoses close to cutting heads, mulching rotors and other areas exposed to impact or vegetation.

Inspect track pads, links and sprockets for damage or abnormal wear. Remove accumulated mud, stones, vegetation and other debris from the undercarriage before operation.

Safety checks should be completed before work begins. Test the emergency-stop systems, inspect guards and shields, and make sure they are correctly fitted and secured.

Check the ROPS/FOPS structure and cab glazing for visible damage. Finally, confirm that the fire extinguisher is present, accessible and within its inspection period.

Weekly maintenance

Daily inspections help identify immediate problems, but they do not replace a more thorough weekly maintenance check. Every five to seven operating days, take time to inspect components that are subject to continuous vibration, dust, moisture and heavy loads.

Lubricate all grease points according to the machine manufacturer’s lubrication chart. Depending on the equipment, this may include boom pivots, blade arms, track rollers, idler bearings and cutting-head shaft bearings.

Heavy use, dusty conditions or frequent exposure to moisture may require shorter lubrication intervals. Regular greasing helps limit friction and premature wear on moving components.

Inspect drive belts for cracks, glazing, fraying and incorrect tension. On mulching and brush-cutting equipment, a slipping belt can reduce cutting performance and place additional strain on related components.

Check chains for excessive stretch, worn links and adequate lubrication, following the manufacturer’s specifications for adjustment and replacement.

Check battery terminals for corrosion and make sure connections are secure. Inspect accessible wiring for chafing, particularly where cables pass close to chassis members, heat sources or sharp edges.

Dense vegetation and vibration can gradually damage exposed wiring. Also test working lights, warning lights and other visible electrical systems.

Forestry machinery regularly works in conditions where grass, leaves, seeds, sawdust and soil can accumulate around radiators and hydraulic oil coolers. Clean the cooling cores as recommended by the manufacturer and check that airflow is not restricted.

Keeping the cooling system clear helps the engine and hydraulic system maintain appropriate operating temperatures, particularly during heavy work or warm weather.

Inspect important fasteners and mounting points on cutting heads, mulching rotors, boom attachments and track frames. Vibration can gradually loosen or wear fasteners during demanding operation.

Use the manufacturer’s torque specifications when re-tightening critical components rather than relying on feel alone.

Carry out a more detailed inspection of hydraulic hoses and fittings than during the daily walk-around. Look for abrasion, swelling, damaged outer coverings, loose clamps and areas where hoses may rub against other components.

Cutting head maintenance

Keeping your cutting head in good working condition

The cutting head is one of the most heavily used components on a brush cutter, mulcher or forestry machine. It works under constant impact, vibration and exposure to debris, so regular inspection is essential for maintaining cutting performance and identifying problems before they affect other components.

Inspect flails and hammers regularly for excessive wear, cracks or missing components. When replacement is required, follow the machine manufacturer’s instructions regarding matching, positioning and rotor balance.

A missing or incorrectly fitted component can create significant imbalance, increasing vibration and placing additional stress on bearings and the cutting-head housing. Never operate the machine with a damaged or missing flail or hammer.

For machines using fixed knives, inspect cutting edges regularly, particularly when working in abrasive conditions. Rotate or replace knives when wear begins to affect cutting quality.

Check counter-knives and their clearance according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Incorrect clearance can reduce cutting efficiency and encourage material to wrap around the rotor.

Pay attention to changes in rotor noise, vibration or bearing-housing temperature. These can indicate developing wear and should not be ignored.

If unusual noise or vibration appears, stop the machine when safe to do so and investigate the cause. Identifying bearing problems early can help prevent more extensive damage to the rotor shaft, housing and surrounding components.

Clean accumulated vegetation and debris from inside the cutting-head housing at the end of each shift, following the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure.

Packed material can retain moisture, contribute to corrosion and potentially affect rotor balance. Check areas around the rotor shaft and seals carefully, where material can build up unnoticed.

Hydraulic system care

The hydraulic system is critical to the performance of forestry and land-clearing machinery. Pumps, valves, cylinders and hoses operate under high pressure and demanding conditions, making contamination, excessive heat and hose damage important maintenance concerns.

Regular checks can help identify developing problems before they result in costly downtime.

Hydraulic fluid can deteriorate through heat, moisture and contamination. Check the fluid regularly according to the manufacturer’s maintenance procedure and look for changes in appearance or condition.

Milky or cloudy fluid can indicate water contamination, while unusually dark or opaque fluid may indicate overheating, oxidation or degradation. These signs should be investigated rather than simply ignored or topped up.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommended hydraulic filter replacement intervals and consider more frequent inspection or replacement when operating in particularly dusty or contaminated environments.

A restricted filter can affect hydraulic performance and, depending on the system design, may allow contaminated fluid to circulate through pumps and valves. Replacing filters as part of scheduled maintenance is generally far less disruptive than dealing with component failure.

Keep an eye on hydraulic operating temperature, especially during prolonged heavy-duty work or in hot ambient conditions. If the temperature moves outside the manufacturer’s normal operating range, reduce the workload and allow the system to cool safely.

The cause should then be investigated. A blocked cooler, low fluid level or internal hydraulic issue can all contribute to excessive heat.

Inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings regularly for cuts, abrasion, swelling, damaged outer coverings or signs of leakage. Pay particular attention to hoses routed near cutting heads, moving components and areas exposed to branches or impact.

Replace damaged hoses promptly and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals. A pressurised hydraulic hose failure can cause serious injury as well as machine damage, so never attempt to inspect or repair a leaking system while it is under pressure.

Seasonal & storage preparation

Preparing equipment for extended downtime or seasonal storage

Heavy forestry equipment should not simply be parked at the end of a project. Proper storage preparation helps protect the engine, hydraulics, battery, cutting components and exposed metalwork from corrosion and deterioration during periods of inactivity.

The exact procedure should always follow the machine manufacturer’s storage instructions.

Where the manufacturer’s procedure permits, bring the engine to operating temperature before carrying out scheduled oil and filter changes. Changing oil at the recommended interval removes used lubricant and contaminants that could otherwise remain in the engine during storage.

Check the fuel system and replace filters when required. For diesel equipment that will remain unused for an extended period, use only fuel stabiliser or biocide products approved for the machine and fuel system.

Check the hydraulic fluid condition and service interval. If a fluid change is due, completing it before storage can help ensure the machine is ready for its next operating period.

Give the machine a thorough clean before putting it into storage. Pay particular attention to the undercarriage, cutting head, radiator and cooling system.

Soil, vegetation and other organic material can retain moisture against metal surfaces, increasing the risk of corrosion. Removing this material also makes it easier to identify existing damage before the machine is parked.

Protect exposed cylinder rods, bare metal and unpainted wear surfaces with a suitable corrosion-protection product recommended by the manufacturer.

Where the machine’s storage procedure allows it, retract hydraulic cylinders to reduce the amount of exposed rod surface during storage.

For storage periods longer than a couple of weeks, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for battery isolation or maintenance charging. A suitable maintenance charger can help keep the battery at an appropriate state of charge.

If the battery is disconnected, protect the terminals and ensure the machine’s electrical system is handled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before putting stored equipment back to work, carry out a complete inspection. Check fluid levels, hoses, belts, battery condition, lubrication points and visible signs of corrosion or damage.

Re-grease the required lubrication points and complete the normal pre-operation inspection. Do not put the machine straight into demanding site work until any storage-related issues have been identified and addressed.
